Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) offer various innovations that can transform transportation systems. According to many experts, the greatest driving force of the ITS evolution will come from the Connected Vehicle Technology (CVT). The effective wireless communications deployed in this technology, has the capability of transforming transportation safety, mobility and also reducing environmental impacts using Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communications. Implementing the connected vehicle technology not only provides a futuristic vision for this technology but also transforms the intelligent transportation systems worldwide. The governmental organizations, transportation research centers and car manufacturers are trying to develop this technology and they've already achieved some notable achievements. This study investigates the impacts and role of the vehicular communications in intelligent transportation systems.
