Turboshaft engines require advanced and precise control systems due to their nonlinear dynamic behavior, performance constraints, and high safety requirements. In recent years, the replacement of hydromechanical control systems with Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems has paved the way for the development of digital Fuel Control Units (FCUs). The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of modeling, simulation, and control methods for turboshaft engines, focusing on the development of FCUs, and test bench systems for the PT6T engine. In this regard, the structure of turboshaft engines is examined. Also, different engine control architectures, including hydromechanical systems, digital electronic control, and FADEC systems, are analyzed, and the design requirements for FCUs are described. In addition, real-time simulation platforms, including SIL and HIL, are introduced as key tools for the development and validation of control algorithms. The results of this study show that the use of a digital architecture based on FADEC allows the implementation of advanced control algorithms, improves the accuracy of fuel flow regulation, increases reliability, and facilitates the development of fault diagnosis systems. The presented framework can be used as a basis for the design, development, and evaluation of digital fuel control units in turboshaft engines.
